I would like to inform you that, due to my current schedule and commitments, I will not be conducting one-on-one workshops until the Summer term. I plan to review my schedule for the summer and will offer some workshop slots, which will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. An announcement will be made on social media channels following a newsletter update.

However I have many visiting workshops scheduled for 2025. With some availability. Please note, pricing is subject to fascilities available, course length and structure.

Brief Description, Animal Sculpture 1-1

In this workshop you will be taught to create your very own ceramic animal sculpture. Using a combination of hollow forming and modelling sculptural techniques such as coiling, slab building and the use of armatures, supports and templates. As well as running through some basic drawing exercises and maquette making.

Your tutor Jack Durling will run through these methodically, step by step, for you to then use and inform your very own animal sculpture. Intermittently bringing the group round to demonstrate on his own piece.

You will be aiming to produce a freestanding or sitting animal. It is encouraged you work towards creating a piece of 30cm x 30cm max.

In this course you should walk away with further knowledge of techniques to hand build and utilise and inform a further understanding of sculpting in clay. With a piece that’s evolved from initial ideas and essentially encapsulates your chosen animal.

Jack has been guest teaching at West Dean College of the Arts since 2019 and taught at various locations and institutions. To keep fully up to date with course release details please sign up to his mailing list.

Please note workshops at West Dean College encapsulate and cover sculpting to decorating and usually see students create 1-2 sculptural pieces.
